Integrating
human rights in public health, within the work of WHO and member
states, prompts the need to strengthen the knowledge-base and
develop skills to enable public health and other relevant
professionals to apply health and human rights principles and
norms in their daily work. This process is a long-term endeavor,
which requires systematic and continuous exposure of WHO staff
to health and human rights training and skill building. It means
the development of various levels of training modules, tools and
guides.
A
training project has therefore been designed to provide a
coherent approach towards organization-wide health and human
rights training. This training will target both WHO staff and
ministries of health, and will consist of both generic and more
specific training modules.
Recognizing
the aim of the WHO draft strategy on health and human rights to
provide intellectual and technical support to countries on
health and human rights, the long-term aim of the training is to
develop the knowledge and leadership to carry this out at all
levels (HQ, regions, and country.) The training project will
ensure that the integration of human rights in health is
sustainable by employing a holistic approach, working with WHO
staff and ministries of health in tandem, to develop the
capacity of public health professionals to apply human rights in
their work.
